One of the most industrious ports in the world

Liverpool’s Legacy

26 May Written By Rick Warren

There can be no more fitting city than Liverpool, to create a Memorial and Anti-Slavery Centre.

Liverpool was the most successful slave port in the world and by the end of the Atlantic Slave Trade 75% of Europe’s trade came through its docks.

Indeed, the preservation of a section of the 18th century slave dock wall has historic significance, as from this dock our city’s slave ships first set sail to eventually carry up to 1.5 million Africans to the New World of the Americas.

The wealth and legacy of which can be seen throughout the city and nation to this day. Liverpool also of course boasts the oldest recorded black community in Britain and the Nation’s first International Slavery Museum. No international Memorial exists in Britain today, the creation of which will bring National and Commonwealth civic pride. During this time of political global change, the development will offer a beacon of hope for cohesion and unity.
